Experts in Kolkata have confirmed on Thursday that West Bengal has reported its first swine flu case after a gap of three years. The last case of swine flu in West Bengal was reported in 2009.

‘One sample has tested positive so far. The health department has already issued circulars and notices to various hospitals across districts,’ Sekhar Chakrabarti, director of National Institute of Cholera and Enteric Diseases, told IANS.

Microbiologist Nemai Bhattacharya, from School of Tropical Medicine, said: ‘After constant monitoring and surveillance for a month or so, we can arrive at any definite conclusion regarding the spread and containment (of the infection).’

What is the swine flu virus?

Swine flu, also known as 2009 H1N1 type A influenza, is a human disease. People get the disease from other people, not from pigs. The disease got stuck with the name swine flu because it originally jumped from pigs to humans. The symptoms of swine flu are very similar to regular influenza and include fever, headaches, chills, diarrhoea, coughing and sneezing. One can prevent infection by maintaining basic hygiene and wearing a proper surgical mask during flu season. The number of cases shoots up during the summers and monsoon seasons. There are various vaccines available to combat the disease and antiviral treatments for prevention as well. One should however only use these medicines under a doctor’s supervision as indiscriminate use might result in susceptibility to the virus.

Prevention

Swine flu isn’t a disease that you can catch from pigs. It is in fact, a human virus that spreads from one human to another. The virus is extremely contagious. Here are some swine flu prevention tips:

It can spread through coughing and sneezing so always cover your face while doing so. And make sure people around you in office or home also follow this.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth too often

Maintain a high level of personal hygiene. Always wash your hands before or after eating and particularly after returning from a public place.

Sometimes virus can spread through droplets that have remained on surfaces of things like laptops, phones so avoid using someone else’s items.

Avoid public places, unhygienic conditions, etc.

If your city/area is swine-flu endemic, always wear a standard swine flu mask in public places (the H-95 mask which is worn by nurses and doctors while collecting samples from swine flu victims). Normal surgical masks which sell like hot cakes during swine flu season might not give enough protection.

If you feel sick and look like you are developing a cold or fever, stay at home and take enough rest. Rest has also been shown to increase ‘interferons’ which help our immunity to fight the virus better. Keeping away from others also prevents spread of the infection.

Civic health authorities in Pune have stepped up screening measures after the spurt in swine flu cases in the city. There have been seven fatalities since January.

A couple of days ago the H1N1 virus in the city claimed a five-month-old baby taking the death toll in the last three months to seven. Half a dozen people among the 20 people currently being treated for the infection in different hospitals are on ventilator support.

According to S T Pardeshi, the Acting Chief Medical Officer of Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), swine flu has become an endemic in Pune and the hospitals have been advised to focus on the elderly with underlying medical conditions and new-borns who are more susceptible to the virus

As per PMC records, the death of the five-month-old baby whose throat swabs tested positive for swine flu on March 20 is the first under the paediatric age category since January. The increase in swine flu cases has been attributed by the health officials to a widely fluctuating and inconsistent climate and temperatures. At present the region is experiencing hotter days and colder nights.

Health officials have advised standard precautionary measures like regular washing of hands with soap, water and alcohol based disinfectants and covering nose and mouth with a tissue while coughing and sneezing to prevent active transmission of the virus. Since January this year 19 casualties from swine flu infection have so far been reported from Maharashtra. The country’s first swine flu casualty was reported from Pune in 2009.

Pardeshi said the civic authorities had not received any advisory that the virus had undergone a mutation. He maintained that with satisfactory results the mainline treatment for the infection continues to be Tamiflu tablets.

Angered at a recent media report that private hospitals were denying treatment to swine flu patients, the Gujarat High Court asked the government to figure out which private hospitals were denying swine flu patients and what action could be taken against such hospitals. The High Court also asked the government to give details about its plans to contain the disease and its outbreak. The notice came to the court in a bizarre manner. The High Court had actually received half a dozen applications from prisons by prisoners seeking temporary bail to so they could manage the treatment of their family members!

A report was also submitted to the court by the government stated that 63% swine flu cases were in urban areas. The report also said that committee has been formed to take measures to contain the spread of the disease, and preventive measures are being taken by the state. Justice Dave also expressed dissatisfaction over the report and made some observations that the government hadn’t taken enough action against to check the death toll that is increasing day by day. So far this year, 127 people have died of swine flu in Gujarat.

Researchers in Australia have discovered that the Tamilflu – the most-effective drug against swine flu – might be losing its effect. While currently 2% of the swine flu strains are resistant to Tamiflu, the researchers found mutations in all the different strains of the virus which suggests that they have the potential to develop resistance.

Dr Aeron Hurt from the WHO centre in Melbourne, said the bug appears more prone than other types of flu to developing drug resistance, The Australian said. Tamiflu resistance develops when a patient under treatment receives the drug to control their symptoms. In most flu viruses, the changes that make the virus resistant also make it less likely to spread to others. With swine flu, this has not happened and the virus remains fit enough to spread to others, Hurt said.

This is a horrible revelation in the sense considering the number of people who suffer from swine flu every year and are administered Tamiflu (Oseltamivir) all over India. If the virus does become resistant to Tamiflu it could lead to a perilous situation and lead to a swine flu outbreak of pandemic proportions

Eighteen people tested positive for swine flu in the national capital on Wednesday, taking the number of those infected to 1,351 this year, an official said. ‘Eighteen more people tested positive for swine flu,’ a doctor from Delhi Health Service told IANS. So far, 16 deaths have been reported in Delhi — one in January, 11 in February and four in March. The city has seen a spurt in the Influenza A (H1N1 virus) cases this year. In 2012, only 78 swine flu cases and one death were reported.

Fifteen more people tested positive for swine flu on Saturday, taking the number of those infected by the Influenza A (H1N1) virus in the capital to 1,267, an official said. There were no new deaths. ‘Fifteen more people tested positive for swine flu but there have been no deaths today (Saturday),’ a doctor at the Delhi Health Service (DHS) told IANS. So far, 16 deaths have been reported in Delhi – one in January, 11 in February and four in March. A spurt in swine flu cases has been seen in the national capital this year. In 2012, only 78 swine flu cases and one death were reported in the capital.

What is the swine flu virus?

Swine flu is caused due to a zoonotic disease which originally was transmitted from pigs to humans and now spreads from one human to another.
