By now, we all know that olive oil is really good for our health and has tons of benefits like lowering the levels of cholesterol and blood pressure, preventing strokes, improving the immune system, etc. But it also has various beauty benefits and this makes it one must-have ingredient in our homes.

Benefits for the skin

Dry skin – Olive oil is good for moisturising the skin. If you have dry skin, massage it well in your skin, not just face but the whole body and get a glow in no time. Areas like elbow and knee get too dry and massaging them with it will lock in the moisture for longer.

Here’s a pack you can make for your face:

Mix some honey and egg yolk in olive oil and blend them all together. Now apply it on your face and leave it for 10-15 minutes before you wash it off with lukewarm water. This will help get back the moisture in your skin and also get rid of the impurities.

Oily skin – It works for oily skin as well due to its non-greasy nature. Since it does not stick, people with oily skin can also use it. They can avoid the face but massage their bodies with it and reap in its benefits.

Irritated skin – Olive oil has antioxidants and good fats which help get rid of the free radicals and also heal the skin. So if you have irritated skin or sunburnt skin then massage it on the affected area.

Stretch marks – Another major concern for both men and women are the ghastly stretch marks. By massaging this oil, you can improve the elasticity of the skin and its regenerative properties will help heal the affected skin. This will not let to the formation of new stretch marks and may also lighten the present ones slightly.

Other beauty problems – Trade your lip balm and under-eye cream for olive oil instead. This will get rid of chapped lips and reduce under-eye wrinkles. Apply a few drops of it overnight and see the difference in a few days. People who have extremely sensitive skin can also opt for this. Olive oil is also good for the nails, making them stronger and healthier. It is also a great solution for cracked heels.

Benefits for the hair

If you suffer from problems like dry, flaky scalp or dandruff, switching to olive oil is a good idea. Massage it with your fingertips in circular motion and then on the tips to get shiner hair. It is very light and does not make your hair too greasy. Applying it weekly once and then washing your hair after 30 minutes of application will give you good results.

People who have frizzy hair or split ends can massage their locks with lightly warmed olive oil. Remember, don’t heat the oil too much as olive oil loses its properties at high temperatures. One can even use it in combination with egg to add volume and shine to their mane.

There are various varieties of olive oil available but extra virgin olive oil is the finest one and will have the most number of beneficial properties than the other types. So buy a bottle of olive oil the next time you go to the supermarket and massage your way to beautiful skin.

Stretch marks are one of the most common complaints of women (and men) worldwide! These unsightly lesions cause millions of people severe distress with many resorting to unnecessary or expensive treatments to get rid of them. Even though they are so common, many people have misconceptions about these pesky scars. Dr Kiran Lohia busts some common myths about stretch marks and explains what the facts really are. Read below to learn.

Myth #1: Stretch marks only happen to women.

Fact: Stretch marks can happen to both men and women. While usually women are most afflicted by it due to pregnancy, men often do suffer from this problem, particularly in cases of weight changes and growth spurts. In fact, many teenagers get stretch marks due to these factors.

Myth #2: Stretch marks only occur on the stomach.

Fact: Striae can happen anywhere on the body where the skin stretches, including arms, legs, hips, breasts and more! So don’t be alarmed if those pesky scars are on your upper arms. It is a common condition that can occur on any part of the body.

Myth #3: If you are skinny, you won’t get them.

Fact: The reality is that no matter how thin you are, genetics and hormones are the number one reason for stretch marks to develop. Remember, these marks happen from skin stretching, not from being obese. So, a rule of thumb is that if your mom has them, you probably will get them too.

Myth #4: There is no way to prevent stretch marks.

Fact: Since genetics are a big cause of striae, it is hard to prevent these marks. However, a regimen of maintaining the suppleness of the skin can help reduce the risk of these skin lesions. First of all, moisturise the skin regularly and without fail! Proper skin hydration improves the elasticity of the skin, ultimately preventing skin from tearing when it is stretched. Secondly, look for creams with cocoa butter, vitamin E, gotu kola and other actives known to help improve skin tone. These actives will help ensure your skin gets the nutrition it needs.

Finally, avoid excessive weight gain or weight fluctuations by having a balanced diet and exercise plan. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is the best way to keep your skin looking clear and toned.

Myth #5: Stretch marks cannot be treated.

Fact: In reality, stretch marks are treatable and can be managed quite well by a good dermatologist. Topically, a dermatologist will recommend a cream that contains both alpha-hydroxy acids and a topical retinoid. Alpha-hydroxy acids are naturally derived from milk and sugar and act by gently exfoliating the top layer of the skin. This reveals newer skin, ultimately reducing the appearance of pesky marks and scars. Topical retinoids are derived from vitamin A, and also act by causing exfoliation, while simultaneously increasing collagen synthesis. This makes the skin more supple and resilient.

In regards to procedures, microdermabrasion is quite effective in removing those irritating scars. Microdermabrasion uses crystals to exfoliate superficial damaged skin, and requires many sessions to see the full results. However, this gentle procedure is very effective. Lasers are also in vogue now, with fractionated lasers showing great results with fewer sessions required. These lasers act by going deep into the skin to give a deeper exfoliation while also improving the ultimate suppleness and texture of the skin.

So if you too have stretch marks on your body and want to get rid of them then you can try these aforementioned procedures and also stop new ones from appearing by keeping your skin hydrated with a good cream.

Turmeric or haldi is one of India’s most widely used spices. Not only is it used to add colour and taste to our food but is also a natural remedy for various skin ailments. It is also a part of Hindu rituals. One of the most important ceremonies of Hindu weddings is the haldi ceremony where a paste made of turmeric is applied to the bride and the groom’s body and face to make their skin glowing for the wedding. Here are some benefits of turmeric that you can use to help with common beauty problems and get flawless looking skin.

Ageing

Turmeric is an excellent exfoliating agent and can help you defeat the signs of ageing. Take besan (gram flour) and turmeric powder in equal proportions and prepare a paste by adding water. You may alternatively prepare this paste in raw milk or even yoghurt. Apply it evenly on your body and leave it till it dries off. Wash it off with lukewarm water and scrub your face gently in circular motion.

Wrinkles

You can use turmeric in combination with other ingredients to manage your wrinkle woes. Add raw milk and tomato juice to rice powder and turmeric powder. Apply the paste and let it stay until it dries. The lactic acid present in milk will help peel off the dead skin cells.

Acne

Not only does turmeric take care of scars and inflammation but also reduces oil secretion by sebaceous glands.

To prepare a turmeric scrub, add a few drops of water and lemon juice to turmeric powder. Apply the paste on the acne and leave it for about 15 minutes. Gently scrub it off your face with plain water.

You can also use turmeric and sandalwood mixture as an acne face pack and wash it off in approximately 10 minutes.

For acne scars, dab a mixture of turmeric and plain water and leave it on the marks for 15 minutes.

To control oil secretion, prepare a paste of sandalwood powder and ground turmeric with orange juice. Leave the paste on your face for 10 minutes and then wash it with lukewarm water.

Stretch marks

A mixture of besan (gram flour) and turmeric in yoghurt/raw milk/water can help lighten stretch marks.

Burns

In case you accidently burn your skin, you can turn to turmeric for quick relief owing to its antiseptic properties. Prepare a mixture of turmeric and aloe vera gel. Apply it on the burn and notice how it heals the wound in no time.

Cracked heels

Apply a mixture of coconut oil/castor oil and turmeric powder on cracked heels preferably 15 minutes before you head to take a bath. It will help heal cracks.

These were some of the many skin benefits of turmeric that can give you flawless skin, the natural way.

During pregnancy your belly will stretch – and so will your skin. There are various reasons stretch marks are caused – pregnancy, rapid weight gain and weight loss. Almost 50% women will get stretch marks during pregnancy. They are caused by tearing of the dermis (the layer beneath visible skin) due to sudden stretching. Hormonal changes and genetics influence the skin’s capacity to withstand stretching forces, as do diet and (possibly) exercise. Watch Dr Eden Fromberg explain why they’re caused and how to prevent them.
