Lip gloss, body lotion, shampoo… the list goes on! Most women use various cosmetic products every day to prep their skin. But are these chemical laden tubes good for our skin and hair in the long run? Nature has provided several products that have the ability to improve the condition of our skin and hair in a totally safe manner, free of chemicals. Here are a few natural alternatives to everyday cosmetics which will help you make the switch.

Coconut oil – Body lotion and anti-dandruff agent

With its composition of medium chain fatty acids, coconut oil is extremely effective at keeping skin healthy and free from dryness and wrinkles. Use it alone or in combination with some other oil or herb, for your skin or also hair – coconut oil works equally well. Because of its ability to penetrate deep into the hair shaft and also the skin, this oil acts from deep within to ensure conditioning and moisturising effects that last for long. Coconut oil is also a source of antioxidants such as vitamin E and so, using it regularly can also help prevent those wrinkles that appear on the skin with ageing.

Henna – Hair dye

Hair dyes work their magic instantly and this is what makes it tempting to reach out for one when you need to hide your greys and look your best. But most synthetic hair dye products contain chemicals called secondary amines or tar derivatives that have been linked to cancer. Switch over to a natural hair dye used since times immemorial – henna. Combine with sesame oil and curry leaves, or mix with beetroot juice, or add into a mix of curd, lemon juice and tea – whatever the shade you desire, henna can help you get it and in the process, also keep your body cool.

Turmeric (haldi) and fruits – Rejuvenating face pack

If you don’t have the time or motivation to head to a beauty parlour, the easiest way to get glowing skin on-the-go is to use a face pack. However, a commercial face pack is quite likely to contain chemicals – preservatives at the very least – that may not be good for you in the long run. Instead, make use of simple ingredients in your kitchen to rejuvenate your skin and give it a soft glow. Mix in some turmeric powder with a little curd and apply on your face. Or, mash ripe papaya fruit into a rough pulp and apply – this will also help reduce the appearance of black spots on the skin.

Aloe vera – Dry skin moisturiser

Moisturising creams for dry skin generally contain ingredients such as petrolatum that tend to be contaminated with harmful chemicals. Instead of taking the risk of these being absorbed into the body through the skin, opt for one of nature’s best skin moisturisers and softeners – aloe vera. Simply make a cut on the fleshy leaves of aloe vera plant, collect the gel that oozes out and apply to your skin.

Garlic and sandalwood (chandan) – Anti-acne effects

A natural powerhouse of antioxidants, garlic helps purify blood and this gives the skin a distinct glow. However, it can also be used directly on the skin for instantaneous relief from pimples. Just peel out the outer covering over garlic clove and rub the clove over the area where the pimple has sprouted. An alternative way to use garlic is to grind a few cloves and make into a paste using some curd; this face pack is effective in reducing acne.

Sandalwood is another excellent alternative to anti-acne creams and also has a moisturising effect. Mix a few drops of sandalwood oil with almond oil and massage this into the skin. Or you can add a few drops of the oil into boiling water and inhale the steam.

Make a paste by using one cup of curd, half a teaspoon of turmeric, a pinch of sandalwood powder and one teaspoon of sugar. Massage the paste on your face with gentle circular movements, leave on for half a minute and then remove by rinsing the face with cool water and pat dry.

Soapnuts (reetha) and shikakai – Gentle cleansing shampoo

Shampoos available in the market make use of chemicals such as sodium lauryl sulfate to produce foam that can cleanse dirt and grease from hair. But along with this, they also remove all oil from the scalp that is so essential to nourish your hair. A natural alternative that avoids such damage is soapnut or reetha in combination with shikakai. Mix equal quantities of soapnut and shikakai powders and make into a paste with warm water; wash hair using this paste. If you find your hair feels a bit too dry with this 1:1 proportion, experiment with lesser quantity of soapnut powder.

Pomegranate seeds (anar ke dane) – Natural lip colour

Exposure to the sun, smoking, dehydration and too much caffeine can turn darken your lips. But dark lips may also be a result of using lipstick daily for a prolonged time. The chemicals in it can cause this and you’ll need more lipstick to hide the darkness… the cycle goes on! Break this cycle and get back the natural pink of your lips with a scrub made from pomegranate seeds. Crush pomegranate seeds and mix in some milk cream; apply to your lips every day and your lips will be naturally red and full. You can also combine crushed pomegranate seeds with sugar and olive oil and use this paste to gently scrub your lips.

Whether it is a skin lightening cream, a hair dye, moisturiser, body lotion or any other cosmetic you need, there is a natural alternative available that is free from harmful chemicals, make use of them.

The common cold is an ailment that affects us not just during the winter, but also at other times of the year and it can be quite a draining experience. There are a few natural remedies that you can use as soon as you feel a bout of flu or cough coming on so that you do not suffer too much.

Keep garlic handy

With its powerful antioxidants, garlic is one of the best protective against cough and cold. If you feel a mild earache, it could be a result of congestion due to the cold. For such conditions, lightly crush a clove of garlic, wrap it in clean cotton and place it in the ear but not so far in that it accidentally gets pushed inside.

For cough and cold, take about 4-5 cloves of garlic, lightly crush and sauté in a little ghee and consume. Alternatively, you may also juice four cloves of garlic, two tomatoes, and a lemon to make a delicious antibacterial and antiviral drink. Some people combine these same ingredients in a blender to prepare a tomato and garlic soup with a little rock salt if necessary.

Treat with turmeric

Turmeric is rich in curcumin and volatile oils that have a protective as well as therapeutic action in persons suffering from cough and cold. As soon as you feel a scratchy sensation in your throat that indicates the onset of a sore throat or cough, make it a practice to use turmeric to avoid aggravating the problem. The easiest way of using turmeric is to drink hot milk into which you have mixed in a little quantity of turmeric.

Some people also prepare a tea using turmeric. Boil 4 cups of water, mix in 1 tablespoon of turmeric powder and keep for 10 minutes. Strain using a fine strainer if necessary, and then mix in a little honey and lemon – your medicinal turmeric tea is ready.

Drink protective herbal tea

Besides the turmeric tea mentioned above, there are other herbal teas that also help people who suffer from frequent cough and cold. These teas combine the beneficial effects of different ingredients such as pepper, ginger, tulsi and cinnamon and thus help keep the flu bugs away.

Mix in 4 pods of cardamom, 4 corns of black pepper, 4 cloves, a few small slices of fresh ginger and a small piece of cinnamon in water. Allow the mixture to boil, turn the flame to low, cover the vessel and simmer for 10 to 15 minutes. Then strain the tea, mix in a little milk or honey and drink it hot.

You can also prepare a simple tea of tulsi by adding about 15 washed leaves of tulsi into 1.5 cups of water and boiling. After about 10 minutes, strain this liquid, mix in 1 tablespoon of lemon juice and drink while still warm. Lemon juice contains vitamin C and this, in combination with the medicinal ingredients of the tulsi will improve your immunity against the cold.

Some people prepare a throat gargle at home using neem and honey. Take about 3 leaves of neem with a medium-sized glass of water and boil. When the liquid has cooled, mix in one teaspoon of honey and gargle with this liquid to get relief from a sore throat.

Homemade medicinal lozenge

Much before the time of Halls and Strepsils, homes in India used to have their own lozenge-like remedies for cough and cold. Here is a simple remedy you can easily prepare. Chop a small quantity of ginger and extract the juice from it; roast and powder a few corns of pepper. Mix the ginger juice, pepper powder, a pinch of turmeric and add a little honey to make small balls of the paste. Place these inside your mouth like you would a lozenge and keep sucking slowly for about 10 to 15 minutes. Repeat two or three times in a day for faster relief.

Remedies for productive cough

If you develop a productive cough (cough that causes phlegm), you can help your body expel the sputum with these simple home remedies. Take a few peppercorns with a little cumin and jaggery. Add a little water and keep boiling until you get a concentrated decoction. Cool and drink to cough out the phlegm blocking your throat.

Take a few betel leaves and crush to extract the juice; take about 2 teaspoons of this juice, mix in 1 teaspoon of honey and consume the mixture twice a day about half an hour after food. This will provide relief in case of productive cough.

Along with the home remedies, you could also try some OTC cough formulations meant for your cough type in order to get relief from some of the symptoms which may be keeping you ‘under the weather’. However, if you find the cough and cold persisting beyond a week, make it a point to consult a doctor to find out if there is some other underlying health issue.

Indian curries are incomplete without garlic – a simple ingredient with packed health benefits. It is very strong and bitter but adds an unbelievable flavour to the cuisine. Any description of garlic is incomplete without mentioning its medicinal values. This miracle herb Garlic has been used since time immemorial as a medicine to prevent or treat various diseases and conditions.

Garlic has a variety of potent sulphur-containing compounds which are the reason for its characteristic pungent odour. Allicin, the vital compound among them, is known to have great anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-fungal and anti-oxidant properties. The benefits of allicin can be best garnered when it’s finely chopped, minced or pureed and let sit for some time. Garlic is also a reliable source of selenium. Allicin, along with other compounds like ajoene, alliin, etc. found in them also have an effect on the circulatory, digestive and immunological systems of our body and help in lowering blood pressure, detoxification, healing, etc.

Here are 15 health benefits of garlic:

Antibacterial and Antiviral

Garlic is most well-known for its antibacterial and antiviral properties. They help control bacterial, viral, fungal, yeast and worm infections. Fresh garlic is thought to play a role in preventing food poisoning by killing bacteria like E. coli, Salmonella enteritidis, etc.

To treat skin infections

The chemical ajoene found in garlic may help treat fungal skin infections like ringworm and athlete’s foot.

Blood thinning

The anti-clotting properties of ajoene found in garlic help in preventing the formation of blood clots in the body. Hence, it may also increase the risk of bleeding after surgery.

Reduce blood pressure

Angiotensin II is a protein that helps our blood vessels contract thereby increasing the blood pressure. Allicin in garlic blocks the activity of angiotensin II and helps in reducing blood pressure. The polysulphides present in garlic are converted into a gas called hydrogen sulphide by the red blood cells. Hydrogen sulphide dilates our blood vessels and helps control blood pressure.

Protect heart

Garlic protects our heart against cardiovascular problems like heart attacks and atherosclerosis. This cardio-protective property can be attributed to various factors. With age, the arteries tend to lose their ability to stretch. Garlic may help reduce this and may also protect the heart from the damaging effects of free oxygen radicals. The sulphur-containing compounds of garlic also prevent our blood vessels from becoming blocked and slow the development of atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries). The anti-clotting properties of ajoene help prevent clots from forming inside the blood vessels.

Reduce cholesterol

Garlic has the ability to moderately lower our blood triglycerides and total cholesterol and reduce arterial plaque formation.

Combat allergies

Garlic is known to have anti-inflammatory property. It can help the body fight against allergies. The anti-arthritic property of garlic is due to diallyl sulphide and thiacremonone. Garlic has been show to improve allergic airway inflammation (allergic rhinitis). Raw garlic juice may be used to immediately stop the itching due to rashes and bug bites.

Remedy for respiratory problems

Daily use of garlic might reduce the frequency and number of colds. Its antibacterial properties help in treating throat irritations. Garlic may also reduce the severity of upper respiratory tract infections. Its benefits in disorders of the lungs like asthma, difficulty of breathing, etc. make it a priceless medicine. Its ability to promote expectoration makes it irreplaceable in chronic bronchitis.

Diabetes

Garlic increases insulin release and regulates blood sugar levels in diabetics.

Effective against warts and corns

Applying fat dissolving garlic extracts to corns on the feet and warts on the hands is thought to improve these conditions.

Cancer prevention

Daily intake of garlic has been found to lower risk of most types of cancer. This anti-cancer property is due to allyl sulphides found in garlic. PhIP, a type of heterocyclic amine (HCA), has been associated with increased incidence of breast cancer among women. According to studies, diallyl sulphide found in garlic inhibits the transformation of PhIP into carcinogens.

Improve iron metabolism

Ferroportin is a protein which helps in iron absorption and release. Diallyl sulphides in garlic increase production of ferroportin and help improve iron metabolism.

Stir up passions

Garlic’s aphrodisiac property is due to its ability to increase the circulation.

Toothaches

Simply put some crushed garlic clove directly on the affected tooth can help relieve toothaches due to its antibacterial and analgesic properties. But be aware that it can be irritating to the gum.

Reduce weight

Many researchers believe that obesity is a state of long-term low-grade inflammation. According to recent research, garlic may help to regulate the formation of fat cells in our body. Pre-adipocytes are converted into fat cells (adipocytes) through inflammatory system activity. The anti-inflammatory property of 1, 2-DT (1, 2-vinyldithiin) found in garlic may help inhibit this conversion. This may help prevent weight gain.

There is a preconceived belief that Indian food is fattening and high on calories. That is the reason why almost all health-conscious individuals are moving to salads and other cuisines these days. However, there are numerous ingredients used in Indian cooking that have great nutritional value and help in burning extra calories. It is wiser to incorporate these ingredients in your daily diet rather than moving to low-fat continental diets.

Turmeric

Turmeric is one of the basic ingredients used in almost all Indian dishes. It is known to have cancer curbing, antiseptic and healthy weight loss properties. A compound called curcumin present in turmeric helps reduce insulin and leptin resistance levels, both of which are responsible for fat deposits. Turmeric also helps in maintaining blood pressure and in eliminating bad cholesterol from the body.

Garlic

Garlic is known for its medicinal properties. Allicin, a sulphur compound present in garlic has anti-bacterial properties. It also has anti-inflammatory properties that also help in burning fat deposits.

Cardamom

Another Indian spice that not only adds flavour but also helps in burning calories is cardamom. This spice is full of digestive properties and helps in enhancing metabolic activity and hence aids weight loss.

Mustard oil

When compared to other cooking oils, mustard oil has very low quantity of saturated fat. It also has a host of other beneficial elements like fatty acid, linoleic acid, oleic acid, erucic acid, essential vitamins and antioxidants which help in reducing cholesterol levels and maintaining an optimum body weight.

Honey

Most of us are aware of honey’s power in reducing calories. Honey dissolved in warm water consumed in the morning helps in cutting down fat within the body.

Curry leaves

Curry leaves not only provide flavour to our food, but they also help in removing harmful toxins and unwanted fat deposits from the body.

Chillies

Chillies are a staple ingredient in Indian cuisine. Powered with a key element called capsaicin, chillies help in increasing the metabolic activity and the heat generating property of capsaicin helps in burning additional fat within the body.

Bean sprouts

Bean sprouts are quite beneficial because they have loads of essential vitamins, minerals and fibre. They reduce hunger pangs and aid in weight reduction.

Cabbage

Cabbage is grown locally in almost all parts of India. It slows the process of transformation of carbohydrate and sugar contents into fat, which in turn helps in maintaining the fat content.

Millets

Millets such as ragi, jowar and bajra are rich in dietary fibre and help in maintaining a good cholesterol level. Millets also enhance bile secretion which burns down the extra calories.

The main theme of this year’s World Health Day is hypertension. It is the condition in which the blood pressure increases above the specified level of 120/80 mmHg. The 120 refers to the systolic blood pressure or the pressure when the heart is actively contracting; the 80 is the diastolic blood pressure or the pressure when the heart is relaxed in between contractions. As any doctor will tell you, an increase in the diastolic blood pressure is often more worrying because it indicates the heart is not getting the rest it needs between contractions; in turn, this can begin to interfere with the heart’s ability to pump at a normal rate, leading to other cardiac problems. Several herbs have been used in traditional medicine to treat hypertension and here we present a few such remedies.

Garlic

Garlic has been found useful in patients whose blood pressure is mildly elevated. It is believed that allicin in garlic increases the production of nitric oxide and this helps to relax the muscles of the arteries, reducing both the diastolic as well as the systolic blood pressure. To get the entire benefits of garlic, it is recommended that you peel and lightly crush the fresh garlic and consume it raw. However, garlic also has the property of thinning blood and this means the clotting ability of blood is reduced; so it is best to use garlic supplements only after you consult your doctor.

Karpuravalli

Coleus forskohlii is the Karpuravalli plant that is grown in many home gardens in South India. In research studies, it has been found to relax the smooth muscles of the arteries and this helps to lower blood pressure. It is also said to make the heartbeat stronger and slow down the pulse. Certain studies have evaluated the action of Karpuravalli tablets and chewable pills and found it helps reduce blood pressure in the elderly.

Drum Sticks

Obtained from the Moringa oleifera plant, drum sticks, called Sahjan in Hindi, are known for their high content of protein and valuable vitamins and minerals. Studies have found that extracts from the leaves of this plant help to reduce both systolic and diastolic blood pressure. The best way to harness this benefit is to cook drumsticks with lentils or dal.

Amla

Traditionally, the amla plant has been used to lower blood pressure. Recent studies have found that aqueous extracts of the leaves of the amla plant help to reduce diastolic and systolic blood pressure; amla extracts also show the ability to reduce levels of cholesterol in the blood and the liver and this could contribute to its antihypertensive action. It is believed that the vitamin C content of amla may also play a role in widening the blood vessels and this may help to reduce blood pressure. Amla is an important component of the Triphala mixture that is commercially available.

Radish

Also called mooli in Hindi, it is a common vegetable that is used in Indian kitchens and has been shown to have antihypertensive action. This action may be a result of the high content of the mineral potassium which helps to counter the BP-increasing effects of a high-sodium diet. Radish can be cooked as a stir fry dish or even better, be eaten raw in a salad or grated and mixed with yogurt to give a tasty raita.

Sesame

In experiments, sesame or til seed has shown an ability to reduce both diastolic and systolic blood pressure. Sesame oil contains sesamin and sesaminol and these are believed to play a major role in reducing the oxidative stress in the body; this has an anti-inflammatory effect on the arterial walls, contributing towards a lowering of the blood pressure. Recent studies have found that combining sesame oil with rice bran oil helps to reduce blood pressure in hypertensive patients more effectively than taking antihypertensive medication alone.

Rauwolfia or Sarpagandha

Traditional medicine practitioners have used Rauwolfia in treating insomnia, snakebite, insanity and high blood pressure. The alkaloid reserpine extracted from this plant was one of the first potent treatments for hypertension. This helps to widen the blood vessels and lowers the heart rate; both these effects ensure the blood pressure stays low. Although both the root powder and tablets are available, it is vital Rauwolfia is taken under the supervision of a doctor because of its potent action.

Flaxseed or Alsi

Flaxseed or linseed is rich in a compound called alpha linolenic acid that is one of the important omega-3 fatty acids. Several studies have found that people with hypertension who include flaxseed in their diet have lower levels of cholesterol and also exhibit a lowering of blood pressure.

While these herbal remedies have shown promising results against hypertension, it is vital to remember that several factors can affect how well these remedies act. Therefore, if you suffer from high blood pressure and are on antihypertensive therapy, you ought to consult your doctor about using these remedies. Most importantly, never forget the other measures that can help keep your blood pressure within control – a diet rich in vegetables and fruits, cutting down on high fat dairy and meat products, eating less salt, having regular exercise and using techniques to keep the mind free of stress.

Need help sowing the seeds of love? Look no further than our guide to fertile-friendly nutrition … If you need some advice to boost your chances of making a baby, our list of fertility-enhancing foods may well deliver some answers. Whether virility or ovary issues keep you awake at night (for all the wrong reasons!), the following foods should have you eating your way to a better level of fertility in no time.

Fertility food for thought

With conception numbers dropping and adoption rates on the rise, you might think the chances of making a baby these days are lower than the modern man’s sperm count. Scientific research paints a fairly grim picture, as sperm and ova abnormalities continue to surge, whilst stress, overwork and alcohol are all held accountable. So, is there anything we can do to prevent the painful cycle of frustration brought on by miscarriages and weakened sperm? Thankfully, the answer is yes. Eating healthily can play a big part in boosting the fertility levels of men and women alike. Whether you suffer from poor potency, hormonal imbalance, or slow egg production, there are a number of foods which can redress the problems faced by many people …

Fertile foods for women

Red meat : Iron-packed red meat can seriously lower the risk of infertility arising in the ovulating process. Iron helps boost red blood cells whilst reducing the threat posed by anaemia. Red meat also offers a great source of zinc, supporting ovulation and maintaining efficient cell division.

Nuts: If you’re looking to go nuts in the bedroom, almonds and walnuts could offer a tasty solution. Their high Vitamin E content heightens the female sex drive, whilst simultaneously protecting embryos from miscarriages.

Oysters: The thought of eating oysters may seem unappealing to some, but it’s certainly worth enduring their acquired taste if you want to boost your fertility. Oysters offer a fine source of zinc which can prove vital for healthy ovulation and steady egg production. And even if you can’t afford to shell out on seafood, traces of zinc can be found in eggs, beans and nuts.

Baked potatoes : Baked potatoes are high in Vitamin B — perfect for sprightly lovemaking. The reserves of Vitamins B and E found in these foods also enhance cell division, increasing the likelihood of healthy ova being produced.

Fertile foods for men

Fresh fruit : Fresh fruit is a great option for men looking to add a little lead to their pencils. With high levels of Vitamin C, it can really help prevent sperm from bunching together — ensuring that potency and sperm quality improve. If you’re desperate to be free of sperm abnormalities, it might be an idea to get a daily supply of kiwi, mango, strawberries or grapefruit. If nothing else, at least it’ll provide a tasty option.

Brazil nuts : We’re nut joking, brazil nuts really can help improve your sperm count. Offering a rich source of selenium, brazil nuts have been known to increase the numbers of active sperm in the body whilst developing their mobility. Selenium is also responsible for boosting testosterone and potency. So maybe it’s time you ate some brazils, to improve the performance of your nuts!

Garlic : Although more traditionally associated with the slaying of vampires, an occasional dose of garlic could seriously improve your fertility. Someone tell Dracula …

Oily fish : The likes of salmon, mackerel and sardines are really helpful if you’re looking to become fit and fertile. Oily fish contains Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) which help to improve blood circulation around the reproductive system and boost sperm quality in the process. It may not be the sexiest of dinners, but an EFA-rich fish supper could be just what you need to perk up those flagging swimmers.

Chilli : Feeling chilli? Eating a spicy chilli dish might really give you a lift, in more ways than one! By speeding up the flow of blood to key reproductive areas, chillis could really boost potency to get you firing on all cylinders.

Give yourself a lift with fertile food

Fertility foods needn’t cost the earth. Whether you hope to become more virile, or strengthen your egg production, the likes of oily fish, nuts and red meat shouldn’t prove too hard to stomach. So stop waiting for that stork to come down from the sky. If you really want to conceive, fulfilling your nutritional needs could offer one giant leap towards a happier future.

A high level of LDL or ‘bad’ cholesterol is well-recognized as a risk factor for heart disease; if you want to keep a heart attack or a stroke at bay, you need to pay attention to lowering it. Along with this, you also ought to do what you can to increase your store of HDL or ‘good’ cholesterol. Here are some foods that have been a part of Indian cuisine for ages, and are now being found to have valuable cholesterol-reducing action.

Fenugreek or Methi

Fenugreek seeds are a rich source of constituents known as steroidal saponins that help to reduce the body’s absorption of cholesterol coming in through the fat-rich foods we eat. Besides, researchers also speculate that these saponins may have a role to play in reducing the body’s production of cholesterol. This, along with the fiber present in the fenugreek seed coat makes methi a valuable weapon in the fight against high levels of cholesterol and triglycerides.

Health.India.com tip:Place methi seeds in a skillet and dry roast using medium heat for about two minutes, with constant stirring. Allow the seeds to cool and then powder; add one teaspoon of this powder to hot or cold water and take once or twice in a day. You could also sprinkle a little of this powder at the end of cooking vegetables in gravy if you do not mind the slight bitter taste it gives.

Flaxseed or Alsi

Also called linseed, flaxseed is a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids that have a protective action on heart health. Like fenugreek, these seeds also contain a lot of fiber and this binds with cholesterol, preventing its absorption. The regular use of flaxseed is said to prevent the arteries from hardening due to the deposition of cholesterol; it also helps reduce the risk of coronary artery disease and hypertension. Flaxseeds also have the effect of increasing the concentrations of apolipoprotein A1 which goes to form HDL cholesterol.

Health.India.com tip: Grind flaxseeds and add the powder into your food towards the end of the cooking process. Although it will not be damaged by heat, the fiber present in the flaxseeds can absorb liquid and cause a thickening of the gravy if added early in the cooking process. Sprinkle a little flaxseed powder over breakfast cereals, cooked vegetables, or mix in with your chutney powder.

Garlic

Garlic has long been used in Indian kitchens to pep up spicy dishes; our ancestors appear to have known a lot about its medicinal value. Research now shows that garlic reduces LDL cholesterol, prevents a rise of blood pressure and also avoids the deposition of plaque on the walls of arteries, reducing chances of heart attack and stroke. Garlic contains sulphurous compounds that act as antioxidants and also help with expansion of the blood vessels, keeping blood pressure at a normal level.

Health.India.com tip: Consume a few cloves of raw garlic every day or crush and add it into your curries and gravies if you cannot bear the raw garlic taste. For maximum benefit, crush or chop garlic and leave it for 5 minutes to activate the beneficial compound called allicin – after this, even adding tamarind or lemon juice will not destroy the garlic’s action. Avoid microwaving or boiling entire garlic cloves because this can destroy the activity of the vital constituents.

Onions

Onion contains a constituent called quercetin that is known to be a strong antioxidant; this means it can prevent the damaging effects of free radicals on human tissues. Researchers have linked quercetin of onions with increased levels of HDL cholesterol as well as low levels of LDL cholesterol.

Health.India.com tip: Consume onion raw in the form of salads. Make a juice out of it by steaming and squeezing. If you can manage the raw smell of onion, just cut the onions without steaming and extract the juice and drink, or mix in a few other vegetables while juicing.

Nuts

Nuts such as almonds, pistachios, hazelnuts and walnuts are rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids that help to keep the arteries healthy. However, eat them in raw form without adding salt or sugar or you will add to the calorie content.

Health.India.com tip: While it is okay to snack on a few nuts, eating too many may prove counterproductive because the fats in them can cause weight gain.

Fish

Certain species of fish are a storehouse of the healthy omega-3 fatty acids that reduce LDL cholesterol and protect the heart. Herring, salmon, mackerel, sardines, halibut and lake trout are good sources of these fatty acids that also help increase HDL cholesterol.

Health.India.com tip: Try to consume fish in grilled or baked form; frying it will only add to the unhealthy fat content of your food. Although omega-3 supplements are available, it is best to get your supply from fish which contain another valuable ingredient – selenium – that is good for your health.

Oats and Beans

Oats are a rich source of fiber and a compound called beta glucan; these act together to bring about a reduction in the levels of LDL cholesterol. Beans also contain a large amount of fiber and can help to reduce the quantity as well as the rate of cholesterol absorption from the diet.

Health.India.com tip: Make dishes containing both black and white Rajma a regular item on your menu. Oats may be consumed by cooking slightly in water and then mixing in milk or buttermilk; you could also substitute oats for some of the rice in dosa batter or khichadi.

The cholesterol in your blood comes from two sources – what your body synthesizes and what you consume through the diet. There may be nothing much you can do about the former but the latter is definitely within your control – all you need to do is keep tabs on what you eat.

Living with arthritis can be quite debilitating if not treated properly. Apart from exercise and the medicines which your doctor would prescribe, you need to be careful with your choice of food. Eating certain kinds of food could help you relieve the pain and discomfort associated with the disease while certain others could worsen the symptoms. Naini Setalvad, renowned dietician tells us more.

1. Spice it up

If you want to beat arthritis you need to include more vegetables such as garlic and onions into your diet. Ideally you should combine them with ginger. I would even suggest simply chewing on ginger all day long – that truly helps! In addition, stock up on the chilli family, ranging from the fresh green chilies to the capsicum. You could also use more spices such as cloves and cinnamon.

2. Try some variety in your rotis

When it comes to your rotis, try those made of jowar, nachani, raagi and bajri. They are great for your arthritis-ridden joints because they contain nutrients that help ease the problem,

3. All fats are not bad

You also need healthy fats to soothe the joints – the kind present in nuts and seeds like walnuts, cashew nuts, pistachios etc. Seeds include sunflower seeds, sesame seeds and flax seeds. Cook your food in extra virgin olive oil and don’t forget to dab some ghee on your rotis. If you do not like ghee you could eat a good amount of the coconut flesh. These fats not only help lubricate the joints, they also help absorb certain vitamins which provide nutrition to the

4. Beware of foods that worsen the pain

As far as possible, avoid tomatoes, lemon, amla, imli, dairy products and wheat. These foods could possibly worsen the pain in the joints. However, the worst part about this is the fact that cutting some of these foods could deprive you of Vitamin C. As a result you must ensure that you get enough guava and kokum in your daily diet. This will not only keep your vitamin C levels up, it also helps fight inflammation.

5. Shun the whites

Other foods that you should avoid are white flour, white sugar and table salt. Switch from white sugar to natural sweeteners like jaggery and dates. You could also replace your white salt with rock salt and sea salt. These salts contain additional minerals that are not available in white table salt, and the minerals are known to heal.

6. Keep a tab on your vitamins
In addition to all the healthy changes, you should also keep a regular tab on your vitamin B 12 and vitamin D 3 levels; the latter being slightly more important in the case of arthritis. If they are low, consult a physician and take the supplements as required, since low vitamin B 12 and vitamin D 3 levels are a sure shot sign of arthritis.

And finally remember that these foods do not replace medications and exercise. Consult a good doctor and get on the road to a pain-free life.

Herbal remedies have been used by people in different parts of the world to treat a variety of conditions. When it comes to cancer, many people with a strong belief in alternative therapy will often approach an herbal medicine practitioner to find relief from the symptoms of the condition, alleviate the side effects of radiation or chemotherapy or to prevent spreading of the cancer. Considering the astounding findings being thrown up by studies on the medicinal properties of herbs, modern-day research is beginning to focus on the usefulness of herbal drugs in cancer.

Basics of Cancer

Cancer basically consists of normal cells getting transformed into abnormal ones by activation of certain oncogenes and suppression of certain other genes that normally suppress tumour formation. These abnormal cells then grow in an uncontrolled manner, avoiding the process of cell death called apoptosis that normal cells undergo. New blood vessels develop to supply nutrition to the tumour and this growth soon attacks other tissues and spread all over the body. The presence of chronic inflammation has been linked to cancer growth and much of the current research on herbal drugs shows that plant ingredients that can reduce or control inflammation are valuable against cancer.

Turmeric

People living in countries like India, where turmeric is regularly consumed, show low rates for some cancers and perhaps this is the reason behind it. Turmeric contains an ingredient called curcumin and research shows that this may have a preventive action against cancer. It has been found to show an ability to differentiate between normal and cancerous cells and can create apoptosis selectively in the latter; besides, it also helps the normal cells stay healthy and thrive. In laboratory studies, turmeric shows best results against cancers of the bowel, skin, breast and stomach. Some studies have also found that curcumin suppresses a mechanism that is responsible for growth of tumours in cancer of the head and neck.

Tulsi

Tulsi is well known for its expectorant properties, making it a valuable ingredient for home remedies for cough and cold. However, researchers are now finding that it is a rich source of antioxidants that helps prevent the negative effects of oxidative stress in the body. One of its components, carnosol, has shown promising results in liver, stomach and prostate cancer as well as leukaemia; it is believed to reduce the size of the blood vessels that supply the tumour and this slows down its growth.

Saffron

A costly ingredient that is generally reserved for use in sweet preparations, saffron has been found to reduce tumour growth in animal experiments. Saffron contains a carotenoid called crocin that reduces the rate of tumour growth probably by inhibiting the synthesis of DNA and RNA in the cancerous cells or by exerting an antioxidant action. In liver cancer studies, saffron was found to stimulate apoptosis and blocking the inflammatory response.

Ginger

Ginger is most well-known for its use as a digestive and the important role it plays in combating nausea. Now, researchers are finding that ginger tends to cause apoptosis in breast and ovarian cancer and leukaemia. More importantly, it has been found that this ability to kill cells is a selective one – only the cancerous cells are attacked, while the normal cells are left unaffected. Some research studies also show that ginger stops the action of enzymes associated with cancer and causes the body to synthesise a greater number of proteins with cancer-fighting properties

Garlic

Garlic gives a typical flavour to food and this prized quality is a result of the sulphur-containing ingredients present in it. Since the past few years, it has been recognised for its action as a digestive, an expectorant, and a cholesterol-lowering agent. Now, preliminary research is showing that consuming garlic may also prevent the development of cancer in the gastrointestinal tract – the mouth, oesophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon and rectum – the breast and pancreas.

Aloe Vera

Traditionally recognised for its value in injuries to the skin and as a laxative, aloe vera is now being studied for anti-cancer properties. Researchers have found that aloe contains an ingredient called acemannan that has antiviral and anti-inflammatory action as well as the ability to stimulate the immune system; this, along with its lack of toxic effect even at high doses has spurred further investigation into its use against cancer.

Some of the most widely used allopathic cancer drugs have been derived from nature – vincristine and vinblastine from the Vinca or periwinkle plant and taxol from the yew plant are examples that easily come to mind. Yet another substance called camptothecin found in the Mappia foetida plant is widely used as an over the counter remedy for cancer in the USA. Although Mappia foetida is not mentioned anywhere in Ayurvedic or Siddha literature as having anticancer action, camptothecin has been found effective against different forms of cancer.

What all this indicates is that many herbs are a storehouse of ingredients that have been hitherto unrecognised for their medicinal value. Including them in your diet can have a cancer preventive action and for people diagnosed with cancer, these herbs alone or in combination with allopathic drugs may prove useful in combating the disease. The fact that they have shown promising results in laboratory studies indicates that in the near future, it is quite likely that herbs will occupy a greater place in the fight against cancer.

It is surprising how certain things happen at the exact time when you wish to avoid them the most. A guest turning up on your doorstep just as you are about to go out shopping, a power failure as the movie on TV reaches its climax and yes, the bane of most teenagers – an outbreak of pimples a day or two before the college fest or a cousin’s wedding when you wanted to look your best. There may be nothing much you can immediately do about the first two events but getting rid of pimples is definitely in your control. By using a few simple ingredients that are commonly found in most kitchens, it is possible to find a quick fix for those ungainly pimples on your face.

Cinnamon and Honey

Cinnamon is a common spice and flavouring agent but the essential oil it contains also has strong anti-microbial properties. The water activity of honey is very low and this means that it does not contain a lot of moisture which can promote the growth of microorganisms. Considering that pimples often arise from an infection within the pores of the skin, combining cinnamon with honey is an effective remedy.

Health.india.com tip: Mix a little cinnamon powder with a little honey to make a paste; avoid adding water because it will destroy the action of honey. Dab a little of the paste on each pimple and allow to remain overnight; wash off with lukewarm water the next morning. Repeat for a few days if necessary.

Lemon juice

Lemons contain vitamin C and phytonutrients called flavonoids that have a strong antioxidant as well as antibiotic action. Free radicals generated during the metabolic reactions within the body can damage the healthy cells of the body, causing inflammation and swelling. The antioxidants in lemonrestrict the action of these free radicals and this makes lemon juice an excellent remedy for pimples.

Health.india.com tip: Squeeze out the juice from a freshly-cut lemon and dab a little directly on to the pimple. Leave on overnight and wash the next morning.

Mix a tablespoon of groundnut oil into an equal quantity of freshly squeezed lime juice and apply over the entire face; this provides long-term preventive action against blackheads that may later turn into pimples.

A word of caution regarding lime juice – it can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight and therefore, do not venture out in the sun when you have applied it to your face.

Tomato Pulp

Tomatoes are acidic in nature and applying their pulp to the pimple causes the skin to dry and the pores of the skin in the region get tightened. This means there is a lesser chance of oil leaking from the pores to cause pimples. Tomato is also rich in antioxidants and applying the pulp to the face reduces inflammation and damage of the skin.

Health.india.com tip: Cut a tomato in half, squeeze out a little of the pulp or the juice and apply on the pimple. If this causes you pain or drying of the skin, dilute the tomato pulp with a little water and use. Do not do this more than once or twice a day because it may lead to excessive drying of the skin which can be quite painful.

Garlic

Garlic is one the wonder foods of India that has remarkable medicinal properties ranging from digestive and antibiotic action to fighting against high cholesterol levels. Garlic is also said to have the action of cleansing toxins from the blood, resulting in blemish-free, glowing skin free from pimples.

Health.india.com tip: Remove the outer skin of garlic and rub a single clove on the problem spot where the pimple has sprouted to see immediate results.

Grind a few cloves of garlic, mix with a little curd and use this face pack on the area where you see the pimples.

Turmeric

Remember how your grandmother always insisted on sprinkling a little turmeric on your wounds saying it would help it heal? Well, medical researchers are now finding that turmeric contains ingredients that make it a powerful antimicrobial. No wonder then that women in India have always been using turmeric paste claiming it keeps their skin healthy and glowing. Although you can apply turmeric paste directly to skin, consuming it with a little warm milk is also said to be an effective remedy for flawless skin.

Health.india.com tip: Mix a little turmeric powder with a little coconut oil and apply directly onto the pimples at night; next morning, wash your face with water to remove the paste.

Dry a few neem leaves in the sun and grind to a fine powder. Mix equal quantities of this powder, turmeric powder and a little rose water to form a paste. Apply this to the pimples, leave it on for around 20 minutes or so and then wash your face. You could also substitute sandalwood powder for neem powder – this remedy works equally well for acne.

Fenugreek

Fenugreek or methi has multiple benefits – not only is it helpful with keeping blood glucose levels low in diabetics, it also helps to treat remove blackhead and prevent pimples from erupting. For skin application, it is best to use the leaves of the methi plant rather than the seeds.

Health.india.com tip:Grind a few leaves of methi with a little water to make a smooth paste. At night, apply this paste to the area of the face that shows evidence of blackheads and wash off with warm water the next morning.

For most teenagers, pimples are a natural result of the fluctuating hormonal levels during puberty that stimulate the sebaceous glands to work overtime. The excess sebum combines with dead cells in the outermost layer of the skin and bacteria to clog the skin pores, leading to pimples. It may also be a result of oily skin or something that runs in the family. Whatever the cause, it is important to remember that scratching or popping pimples and using certain artificial ingredients on the face you do not know much about can cause the problem to aggravate. Rather, use simple herbal remedies to keep your skin healthy and pimple-free.
