A blood bank refers to that wing of a hospital that is responsible for the storage and proper testing of donated blood and its components. This is mainly done to avoid diseases that are transmitted through the blood and other body fluids. Blood banks not only store blood they also store plasma, packed red blood cells and platelets. Previously, blood banks were only found in hospitals but today it also refers to collection centers and independent blood banks that tie up with hospitals to provide the service.
