Having a baby doesn’t mean that it’s the end of your sex life. However, most doctors do recommend that a woman wait at least 6 weeks post delivery before indulging in sexual intercourse. Due to delivery the vagina is usually stretched a lot and this leads to a great deal of discomfort. Also due to low estrogen levels, post-delivery a woman’s libido might go down. The vagina is also a lot drier than usual leading to discomfort during sex. Most experts recommend a water-based lubricant to get over vaginal friction. Kegel exercises are also recommended.

Another issue to keep in mind during postpartum sex is the fact that though you might not be getting your ‘periods’ you’re still ovulating and can technically still have another baby so birth control is advised. Diaphragm birth controls are however not a good option because of the vagina’s changed shape. Condoms are usually the best bet. Hormonal birth control pills are also risky because they might interfere with the body’s hormonal levels and in turn affect breast-feeding. Watch Dr Adam J. Flisser explain more…
