According to a leading eye surgeon, Bindra, who underwent a LASIK surgery which could have hampered his chances of winning a medal at this year’s Olympics. Most LASIK surgeries have standard procedures where an individual’s vision is brought as close to possible to zero power. However, Bindra had spent the better part of his life practising with glasses. His eye, trigger-finger and brain were interlinked together and the vision ‘correction’ might have ruined this delicate equilibrium.
Having become accustomed to a vision defect, it’s quite possible that this surgery could have ruined his chance and cost India the opportunity to have a double gold medallist.
In case of Bindra, such things could have been avoided if the treatment had been “customised” or “tailor-made” keeping his profession/hobby in mind. The doctor further said, “Doctors must ask the patient about their lifestyle, hobbies and profession before planning a treatment. All treatments must be planned keeping in mind these things.”
