Haryana has emerged as the country’s first hookah free state . All in all 66 hookah bars across the state were forced shut by the government. It is estimated that over the period of one year, 100 samples were taken, in which 90 samples were found to be nicotine positive. Officials indicated that these hookah bars were catering to youngsters. According to the law, providing nicotine to minors is a punishable offence.
Court cases have been filed against the owners of all 22 hookah bar owners. A majority of the bars were in Gurgaon, adjoining New Delhi, and Panchkula, adjoining state capital Chandigarh. The hookah bars were mostly being frequented by youngsters, officials said here.
