American businessman and one of the world’s richest men Bill Gates will meet UP CM Akhilesh Yadav today. He is slated to reach Lucknow at 12 noon. Gates is likely to discuss a host of healthcare programmes that the Bill and Melinda Foundation plans to take up in the state. An advance team from Gate’s office has met senior officials in the state last week and done the ground work for the Gates-Akhilesh meeting. Gates is likely to present a five-point programme that his foundation plans to unveil in UP to enhance healthcare in sectors like neo-natal care, maternity, nutrition, family planning and child health. Under the schemes Gates proposes to suggest and fund include compulsory immunization, timely and extensive care of a would-be-mother and her nutrition. Gates is also understood to be particularly interested in taking up drives like polio eradication and other vaccinations, which are in poor state in UP.
According to a report in a leading daily, the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation is looking to form a more productive relationship with the state government and they see a new opportunity with Akhilesh Yadav becoming the CM. They look to address the state’s nutrition problems and neonatal mortality. One thing they are going to try out is a checklist of things to do decrease neon-natal mortality and making the immediate post-delivery period safer for the child. The foundation is also looking to invest in women’s health and family planning.
The report also added that there’s a large burden on the state in terms of population and disease and there’s tremendous opportunity for making advances.

Good that Will Gates cares for the health issues of UP. He can pour in money for these programs and of course this will be routed to the target population through the politicians/ health personnel and the bureaucrats. They are already under investigation for scam in Rural health program. We hope some more attention will be paid to human resources quality improvement which only people of UP including it’s politicians/ doctors/ bureaucrats and others so that real benefits intended by the donor benefit the target groups.
