Big BAccording to tweets posted by his son Abhishek and later Big B himself, the actor was recovering well after the hernia surgery he underwent on Saturday. Nagging pain in the abdomen had prompted him to visit the hospital. According to an insider, Bachchan underwent surgery for a bilateral inguinal hernia. An inguinal hernia is one in which a loop of intestine enters the inguinal canal and is the most common form of hernia in males.

We understand the operation lasted for four hours and the actor is going be kept under observation for 24 hours. Amitabh thanked all his fans for the good wishes and prayers on Twitter. He had a few visitors from the industry including producer Bunty Walia. Although we have no word on when Big B is going to be discharged, according to experts inguinal hernia surgeries aren’t too complicated and patients are usually allowed to leave in a day or two.

Inguinal hernias develop from weakness or tear in the wall of the lower abdomen or groin. Some experts think that the intestinal injury the actor suffered during the filming of his 80s blockbuster Coolie could be the reason behind his complications.

Symptoms of an inguinal hernia may include:

Formation of a bulge around the abdominal or groin area :The bulge can either appear gradually over an elongated period or suddenly while weight-lifting, coughing, bending, straining, or even laughing. They often flatten when one lies down.

Discomfort or pain around the abdominal area:  The discomfort worsens while bending our lifting things. There are hernias where the patient feels no discernible pain. Other symptoms may include sudden pain, nausea and vomiting.
