Opting for a weight loss surgery? Check these guidelines!

Even as India and China top the global chart of obese and diabetic people, experts charted out five prerequisites for patients and surgeons before weight loss surgery.  With the growing trend in metabolic surgery, increasing problems of obesity, these guidelines will help patients to understand whether they can use bariatric surgery as an option.

Doctors came up with the following directives to be kept in mind by physicians as well as patients, they are as follows:

1.The metabolic surgery team must be a multidisciplinary team.this is in view of the fact that patients who undergo surgery , need life-long follow up by the diabetologist /endocrinologist/ bariatric physician and a nutritionist.

2. The basic metabolic index (BMI) of the patient  is an important criteria to consider. Patients of type two diabetes with less than a BMI of 30 must be offered surgery only under experimental protocol.

3. Metabolic surgery must be performed only at high volume centers, performing more than a 100 procedures in a year.

In a statistical analysis, US stands third in the list with over 23 million diabetics. While bariatric surgery is the most suggested treatment mode for obese people, the IDF last year called for the surgery to be considered earlier in the treatment of eligible obese diabetic patients. A prospective trial is going to be started comparing the results of surgery with medical management to see the effects on micro and macro vascular complications of diabetes in these patients, the task force added.

She is 100% correct. I am 7 years post-RNY and it was so easy once I got past 6 weeks post-op. I exeircsed daily, faithfully drank my water and followed the plan. I really had no choice. But as time wore on, my pouch could tolerate more (even though I still get dumping syndrome, thankfully). After about 3 years, I hit a plateau and began to gain. I became very conscious of what I was eating again and managed to lose 30 lbs in the past year and am back down to where my lowest was again! The tool makes it a little easier to diet than the normal person this many years out, but not the advantage it was when I was a newbie. My advice is to really avoid your trigger foods at all costs. Don’t look back at them. I won’t even LOOK at a certain ice cream at the store seriously!
