Bollywood glam moms give fitness tips to the new ones

aishGone are the days when motherhood used to lead to an ill-shaped, flabby body. In-shape Bollywood moms like Malaika Arora Khan, Twinkle Khanna and Karisma Kapoor  and more recently Aishwariya Rai and Lara Dutta have proved that a woman can look just as fit and stylish as she used to before becoming a mom.

These hip Bollywood moms, who have maintained their figure even after having kids, have become a source of inspiration and role models for many housewives and working women. ”When I was pregnant, I was very nervous about the fact that now I will never be able to get back to the size I was before having a baby. Then I saw Twinkle Khanna and Karisma Kapoor and I realised that if they can do it, so can I,” Reetika Shah, a 29-year-old mother, told IANS.

“They inspired me to not just let go of myself after my child is born. So once I gave birth to my baby girl, I started exercising and thankfully didn’t gain extra weight at all,” she added.

Reetika is not the only one; others too have become regular with their workout.

“Actresses like Malaika Arora and Twinkle Khanna are the new age moms. They are perfect examples of having babies, maintaining careers and remaining fit. Something every woman loves to be. Mothers are inspired by them and that’s definitely one of the driving forces for them to exercise to get bodies like them,” Althea Shah, vice president, marketing and fitness expert Gold’s Gym India, told IANS.

After delivery, many women stop caring about their body because they get busy with their children.

Reema Hiranandani, a 33-year-old housewife, said: “I used to have a good figure before my pregnancy, but I gained weight after my son was born. Till he was four, I didn’t do any exercise and I was just putting on weight.

“I had a mindset that now I’m a mother and it’s okay if I look a little healthy, but my husband once commented that even Karisma Kapoor has two babies but she is still so fit. That hit me and I realized that he is right. The next day I joined the gym,” she added.

There are many ways a woman who has given birth can stay in shape.

“Every individual must do at least two to three days of cardiovascular workout. It may be simple walking turning into a brisk walk. Following a pregnancy, the muscles that make up the abdominal wall will have considerably less elastic than their pre-birth condition. Toning these muscles can help increase your circulation and help bring back your pre-pregnancy figure,” said Shah.

“While your body needs time to recover from the trauma of birth before resuming a regular workout, you can perform simple exercises like pelvic tilts, pelvic crunches, bicycle kick, etc., to stay fit,” she added.

So it won’t be an exaggeration to say that Bollywood moms like Amrita Arora, Sonali Bendre, Raveena Tandon, Juhi Chawla, Pooja Bedi and Perizad Zorabian have not only entertained their fans, they have succeeded in inspiring them too – as mothers.

I would like to thank Runner’s World for starting this therad and all of the awesome moms for the supportive advice they’ve offered. I am 22 weeks pregnant with my first child! I’ve been active in athletics my entire life, but have considered myself a runner for 4 years. In that time I’ve completed 4 marathons, 5 1/2 marathons, and numerous other shorter distance races. In addition, I’m an active skater with my local roller derby team. I’ve been very fortunate to find a doctor who is supportive of my active lifestyle, and the only restriction she’s given me is no more roller derby for now! So far I’ve seen only positive results from my continuing with a steady running schedule. I’ve dropped from 5 days a week to 4 days, am obviously much slower, and am supplementing with more swimming, which has been very helpful with recovery. I had no morning sickness or fatigue. Early on, it seemed like I couldn’t run 5 minutes without feeling like I needed a potty break, but I started doing Kegels religiously, and for now it seems to have resolved the issue completely. The only potty breaks I need now are about halway through my long runs, and I think that’s more mental than anything else. Between my 2nd and 3rd month I also had consistent lower abdomen tenderness from that initial uterine growth spurt, and had to decrease my runs to just 2-2.5mi per outing but I was determined to stay consistent with going out 4 days/week. I’m very glad that I did because once that tenderness subsided I was able to steadily increase my distances so that now I’m up to 3mi a couple of days a week, a 4.5miler, and a long run that is now up to 10 miles! I’ve signed up to run/walk a 1/2 marathon that will fall during my 33rd week, and I am so excited. It’s great to have that extra motivation for the days that I’m not really tired, but am just feeling kind of lazy. In addition to the running and swimming, I’ve kept up with strength training 3 days/week. I have a friend with a due date within 2 weeks of mine, who was also very active pre-pregnancy, but has since stopped all or nearly all of her activity. She’s complained about backache and fatigue and can’t believe I’m not having any of those issues. I definitely credit staying active with the strength work for that! I know that I’m not yet to the most difficult and potentially uncomfortable stages of pregnancy, but I’m confident that by staying focused on staying active and healthy, I’ll be able to help my body feel as good as possible.I am so appreciative of this therad because it is kind of draining sometimes to deal with the comments from family and friends about me staying so active. They are usually a version of So, how long is your doctor going to let you keep this up? , like staying active is some bad habit that the doctor is hoping to break me of at some point! My runner and derby friends get it, but family and other friends just seem perplexed. Fortunately my husband is super supportive and loves bragging to his friend’s about what a badass his wife is! He’s even set aside funds so we can invest in a treadmill before the baby arrives! It’s really nice to see pages and pages of comments from women who have the same mindset as myself: steady activity is one of the best gifts you can give to yourself and to your baby!
