Recently, B-town actress and international superstar (we guess) Priyanka Chopra set tongues wagging with her severe weight loss, ultra-thin and waif-like size zero figure at a recent media meet. This is not the first time that she has been accused of being anorexic and the lady who was earlier revered for her curves (think Dostana bikini scene) has denied being anorexic in the past. At the launch of her album In My City, ‘Size zero and me, no I don’t believe in it. Who said I am size zero?’
The reason there’s so much hue and cry every time some actress loses so much weight and comes out looking like a coat hanger is because these women are idols for thousands of young girls around the county. When they display such insanely thin figures, they’re sending a message to all those young girls that they should eat less or starve themselves to fit into a societal ideal of what beautiful women should look like. It creates a negative body image, making women believe that they need to be stick thin to be perceived as beautiful. To top it, it has been suggested by many nutritionists and dieticians that many of these actresses could be anorexic (of course it’s possible they’ve crazy metabolism which allows them to keep naturally thin). But anorexia or to use its proper name anorexia nervosa is a real problem, an eating disorder that has affected millions of women (and men) across the world.
What is anorexia nervosa?
It’s an eating disorder characterised by extreme food restriction and an irrational fear of gaining weight. Because of this, sufferers limit the amount of food they eat. People who suffer from it are called anorexic. Various health issues are connected with this condition including a lack of energy, headaches, drowsiness and dizziness and in the long term conditions like hormonal imbalance, cardiac arrests, reduction of bone and even death (studies show that anorexia has the highest death rate among all psychological disorders).
But Priyanka’s not the only who’s been accused of being anorexic or being too thin. Here are some other celebs who’ve been accused of the same sin:
The Jab Tak Hai Jaan actress has long been accused of being too thin but she has rubbished all suggestions that she’s anorexic. She said at a media event, ‘That’s all crap. I have always been on the thinner side. And look at the other side too. There are people who can’t lose weight. Why aren’t they asked about it? I am one of those people who can’t gain weight. That said, have I ever landed up in hospitals saying I am exhausted? I am a very fit girl. Think of it, only my parents should bother about my weight and even health. Next question, please’.
She was the first one to really popularise the size zero look in Tashan as she enthralled the audience in a tiny bikini. Since then the actress has defended her figure claiming that it’s ‘every girls want to be thin and that anyone who says fat is sexy is talking crap’! Interestingly, Kareena is one of those starlets who was quite obese in their youth and lost a lot of weight before entering the industry.
The Krrish 3 actress claims that she and not Kareena introduced Bollywood to the size zero heroine and told Box Office in a chat, ‘Yes, you could call me a trendsetter because when I made my debut in this industry, everyone was so plump and I was really skinny, and suddenly all these girls started following the size-zero trend. You know, during ‘Gangster’, people asked me why I was so skinny and then later, the same people started going size-zero.’
The actress who was thin to begin with lost even more weight for a bikini scene in Cocktail and has been accused of being too thin. In an interview with TOI, she revealed a diet which was almost devoid of carbohydrates except for the occasional fruit. Of course, it’s quite possible that the actress is naturally thin and has an extremely fast metabolism considering her athletic heritage.
When she first came into the industry the actress was quite curvy, but in the last year or so she seems to have lost a lot of weight. Her recent bikini pictures taken on the beaches of Spain shows an extremely thin Katrina and if she keeps going the same way she just might just grace our size zero list.
